29th November. I'm Not Sure If I Like The Look of That.

Another Woman whose overiding concern is "How it's going to look." rather than whether the stove is going to set fire to the curtains, blinds, window sill or skirting board.

How would it look then ? Like a burnt out house with the insurance company ultimately quibbling about the minimum distance to combustables.

That wouldn't look good at all, especially for me, I think we touched on the subject of insurance recently...

Hi... I'm wrestling with the combined 'challenges' of a wife whose main concern is w.b. stove cosmetics, and a local supplier/installer who is trying to move my financial exposure from £1K to about £10K! The latter is partly to do with building regs and his view that my ideas of an external flue running up the house gable will set fire to windows and require all manner of planning consents etc. He wants to have a window bricked up and then duct the flue into the original chimney. But thinks the chimney stack might need demolished and rebuilt as it's got a slight lean on it...
You wouldn't care to come over here (Oban) and estimate for the work would you? I'll even play Ogdens Nut Gone Flake at full volume and furnish you with copiuos caffeine beverages of your choice...cheers -Keith

Normally it's usually less bother to put a liner in and existing chimney if the stove can be sited there.

As for leaning chimneys, not normally anything to worry about relative to the lifetime of the building.

I could have a look but it would have to be in Jan due to the number of people I said 'before xmas' to.

Hi - thanks for that, particularly the reassurance that the leaning chimney stack may not be serious. Certainly the surveyor was not concerned with the lean 21 years ago when we bought the house and since then it's got no worse and I've removed the source of problem (o/h power cable to house anchored to stack).
Happy to see you after new year, weather permitting etc. You can e-mail me at poseidon999@madasafish.com
I'll probably now be inundated with spam by quoting that addy, but what the hell....cheers....keith
